FIRST CHURCH OBSERVES LENT
The season of Lent began Ash Wednesday, February 17th. Since ancient times the church has used this period of forty days before Easter as a time of preparation, a time to renew our commitment to being disciples of Jesus Christ. Being a disciple is difficult work. Jesus called us to become servants of all, to love our enemies, to take up our cross and follow him. This business is not for sissies. It is so difficult in fact that many Christians suffer from burnout trying to follow Jesus. At first church we believe the secret to avoiding burnout is a full and rich spiritual life built around one or more spiritual practices. Trying to be a disciple without a meaningful spiritual practice is like trying to propel a 747 by flapping your arms.
Unfortunately many folks have never learned any of these practices, or they have hit a dry spot in what may have worked in the past and need to find a way through it. To help with this we are providing special Lenten programs to help each disciple find a practice that works for them. For those experiencing a fast, we want to provide a feast. Here is one way:
